About Library
The Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) Library was established in 1938 with the objective of collecting and disseminating literature on various projects related to water resources, energy, coastal and hydraulic engineering, and other fields undertaken by the organization.
From 1982 to 1988, the UNDP/UNESCO-aided project "Water and Power Information System" was executed, introducing the HP 3000 Series and MINISIS Library Management Software to manage and process library databases and services. In 1998, the MINISIS databases were migrated to LIBSYS version 3.2, followed by an upgrade to version 4.0 in 2009. During this period, the library reached a level where information on any subject of interest to research personnel could be sourced efficiently from a variety of media, including databases, compact discs, microforms, and international online databases.
In 2019, the Library underwent a major transformation by migrating its data from the LIBSYS 4.0 LMS System to the cloud-based e-Granthalaya Library Management Software. This marked a significant step forward in streamlining operations and enhancing user experience, offering unlimited storage capacity and 24x7 OPAC services via the Internet. Bibliographic details for Books, Conference Proceedings, Reports, and Technical Reports of CWPRS, along with National and International subscribed Journals, became accessible through e-Granthalaya. Additionally, users gained direct access to e-Journals via this platform within the campus.
The Library also hosts an Institutional Repository, which provides full-text access to digital collections, including Annual Reports, Conference Proceedings, and Technical papers from various National and International Journals.
Starting in 2021, the Library was further upgraded to a Digital Library under funding from the National Hydrology Project and non-plan schemes. As part of this modernization, the Library implemented an RFID security system with self check-in and check-out facilities to enhance document security. To embrace the digital age, a digital reading kiosk was established, enabling users to access digital materials seamlessly.
To further improve user experience, the library introduced a touchscreen display integrated with the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). This intuitive interface allows scientists and engineers to search and access library resources efficiently and conveniently.
As part of its digitization efforts, an A3 scanner was installed for preserving rare and valuable documents by digitizing them for easy access and future reference. The Library also adopted RemoteXs software, which enables scientists to access e-Journals from remote locations.
These developments have not only upgraded existing library services but also significantly improved access to documents by facilitating retrospective searches and providing selective information on any topic of interest within minutes. Alongside its online services, the library efficiently tracks document movement through the e-Granthalaya system. It continues to procure Books, Periodicals, Reports, and related materials based on the requirements of research personnel, ensuring their availability for ongoing research needs.
